The Houston Pumpkin Festival near Pittsburgh has been canceled just days before its October start after rain and flooding left the grounds unsafe for vendors and crowds.
Organizers of the Houston Pumpkin Festival in Houston, Pennsylvania, called off this year’s event after recent weather left the site unfit for a large outdoor gathering, The U.S. Sun reported.
The festival had been set to run from October 9 through October 11, roughly 23 miles outside Pittsburgh. The Houston Fire Company Board of Governors joined organizers in the decision.
Officials said continued rainfall and flooding created unsafe conditions across the festival grounds. They warned the site could not support crowds, heavy setup, or a clean exit for equipment once the weekend ended.
Festival leaders said the latest storms finished the job. Water and soft ground raised risks for anyone walking the property and for the temporary infrastructure needed to run the show.
The pumpkin festival stated:
"Unfortunately, the most recent rain events and additional flooding have left the grounds unsuitable for an event of this size,"
Organizers also pointed to practical problems beyond guest safety. Vendors still had to roll in, set up, sell, and then get trucks and gear back off soft, flooded land.
The festival added:
"Significant concerns existed not only for attendees navigating the grounds, but also for the extensive infrastructure required to operate the festival, vendors setting up and conducting business safely, and the ability for vendors and equipment to exit the grounds following the event."
More than 100 vendors had been lined up with food and activities. Local coverage cited in the report put the expected draw even higher, at more than 175 food, craft, activity, and entertainment vendors.
Organizers said they moved now so those businesses would not learn of the scrub at the last minute. An email went out to registered vendors with options and next steps.
The festival said:
"By making this decision now, we hope to provide our vendors and participants with as much notice as possible to pursue other opportunities. An email has been sent to all registered vendors outlining available options and next steps,"
One piece of the weekend is still on the calendar. The Pumpkin Parade remains scheduled for October 10.
Leaders also thanked the sponsors and community partners who keep the tradition going in a small Pennsylvania town that draws fall visitors from the Pittsburgh area.
The festival stated:
"We also want to thank our sponsors and community partners, whose continued support makes this tradition possible."
No individual spokesperson was named, and no street address for the grounds was released in the report. Measured rainfall totals and formal flood declarations tied to the site were not provided either.
When the ground will not hold the people, the trucks, and the gear, the responsible call is to shut it down, even if that means a cherished fall weekend goes dark.
