Capital One is offering people opening new 360 Checking accounts a $250 bonus, but the deal requires a promo code and two qualifying deposits.

The Sun reported that applicants must enter the code CHECKING250 when opening the account. Capital One says the online application takes about five minutes.

Customers then must receive at least two qualifying direct deposits of $500 or more within 75 days. That means at least $1,000 must arrive through eligible deposits before the deadline.

The 360 Checking account carries a stated annual percentage yield of 0.10% on all balances. Capital One also advertises access to paychecks up to two days early, though employer payment instructions may affect that feature.

Not every electronic payment counts toward the bonus. Capital One says salary, pension and government payments such as Social Security are examples of eligible direct deposits.

Transfers between accounts will not satisfy Capital One’s deposit rule

The exclusions deserve close attention. Capital One states, “Wire transfers, ACH credits, and funds transfers initiated using Capital One’s website or mobile app are not considered a Qualifying Direct Deposit.”

In plain English, moving money through one of those methods will not meet the promotion’s stated requirement. Applicants need deposits that Capital One classifies as qualifying, and they need two of them within the 75-day window.

The clock starts when the new account opens. Missing the code at signup or receiving the required deposits after day 75 could leave an applicant outside the terms described for the offer.

Consumers should also note that the available details do not state a calendar start or expiration date for the promotion. Anyone considering the offer should check the current terms before opening an account.

The $250 bonus may take as long as 135 days to arrive

Meeting the deposit rule does not mean the cash will appear immediately. After the first 75 days, Capital One says it will assess eligibility and may take up to another 60 days to process the bonus.

Capital One explains the full timetable this way: “This means, if all requirements are met, you can expect your bonus to be deposited into your account within 135 days from account opening.”

So a customer could complete both deposits early and still wait months for the $250. The bank’s stated timetable allows the entire process to run for roughly four and a half months.

The offer is simple enough on its face: use CHECKING250, open the right account and receive two qualifying deposits of at least $500 each. The fine print determines whether the promised cash follows.

A sound deal requires clear terms, and a careful customer reads them before handing a bank new business.
