Tropical Smoothie Cafe CEO outlines major brand overhaul as chain approaches 1,800 stores

Tropical Smoothie Cafe is rolling out a major brand refresh with a new logo and guest experience as the Atlanta-based chain closes in on 1,800 locations by year-end.

CEO Max Wetzel told FOX Business the fast-casual chain unveiled a new brand identity, redesigned logo, and refreshed guest experience on Sept. 16, built around its “Eat Some Good!” philosophy.

The move is not a reinvention. Wetzel framed it as a clearer expression of what already works as the company keeps stacking locations, digital sales, and loyalty members.

Tropical Smoothie Cafe, known for made-to-order smoothies, wraps, and bowls, has surpassed $1.6 billion in system sales. Its loyalty program now counts 13 million members. Management says the chain is on track to top 1,800 locations by the end of the year.

Consistency across every guest touchpoint

Wetzel said the refresh aims to show what makes the brand distinct and to lock in the same look and feel everywhere customers meet it.

He put it this way:

"This is really less about changing who we are, and it's really more about expressing what makes Tropical Smoothie Cafe so unique and so special,"

And on the consistency goal:

"We wanted to bring consistency across all consumer touchpoints,"

He added that the brand has already changed a lot over time:

"Our brand has evolved quite a bit."

That matters in a crowded fast-casual field where customers bounce between apps, drive-thrus, and storefronts. Nearly 40% of the chain’s sales now run through digital channels. Wetzel said a large share of guests decide before they ever walk in.

"Forty percent of our guests are making decisions outside of the cafe,"

So the company is pouring money into its website and app, not just paint and signage. The store experience still has to match what the phone promises.

Growth by basics, not by hype

Wetzel rejected the idea that Tropical Smoothie is chasing size for its own sake. He tied expansion to steady execution.

"Growth has been a result of a lot of small things done consistently and executed really well,"

He also said:

"We're not chasing growth just for growth's sake,"

"We are very disciplined and focused in the way that we're approaching growth."

That discipline shows up in the map. The Atlanta-based company is pushing into airports and military bases while keeping the main focus on U.S. growth. International work is underway, but Wetzel made clear there is still plenty of room at home before the chain floors the gas overseas.

Operations are getting the same treatment. The company is rolling out a “Smooth Operator” food prep system and testing self-service kiosks. The pitch is simple: tighter kitchens, cleaner guest flow, fewer mistakes.

Value and trust beat the race to the bottom

Wetzel’s read on the customer is blunt. Shoppers are not hunting the lowest sticker price. They want a fair return for what they spend, and they stick with brands that deliver the same product the same way.

"I would say that consumers aren't looking for the cheapest option. I think they're looking for great value for the dollars that they're investing in,"

On why a guest picks one cafe over another:

"At the end of the day, if a guest chooses you or one of our competitors, it comes down to trust, and that trust is built by consistency,"

That is a market lesson, not a slogan. Chains that cut corners to win a price war often lose the repeat visit. Chains that keep the food, the app, and the store in line keep the customer.

Tropical Smoothie Cafe is betting that a clearer brand, tighter operations, and digital reach will turn that trust into more stores and more sales without diluting what got it here.

In a free market, that is how real growth works: deliver value, stay consistent, and let customers vote with their wallets.
