Jack in the Box tops Chick-fil-A in national spicy chicken sandwich ranking

A new ranking from food outlet Tasting Table crowned Jack in the Box's Spicy Chicken sandwich the best in fast food, bumping Chick-fil-A, the longtime fan favorite, to second place.

Tasting Table tried spicy chicken sandwiches from nine major fast food chains and placed the San Diego-founded Jack in the Box at the top of the list. Chick-fil-A, often treated as the gold standard in the chicken sandwich category, landed at number two. KFC, Popeyes, and McDonald's rounded out the top five, with Whataburger, Wendy's, Burger King, and Church's Texas Chicken filling out the remaining spots.

The ranking drew immediate reaction online. On Reddit's Chick-fil-A forum, some users pushed back while others said the result matched their own experience. One commenter wrote, "I've been saying Jack has the best spicy chicken sandwich." Another admitted surprise but curiosity: "Surprised at the number 1 choice. I might have to check it out."

Jack in the Box won on size, flavor, and toppings

Tasting Table praised the Jack in the Box sandwich across the board, chicken, bread, and build. The reviewer described the sandwich in terms that left little room for argument about why it earned the top spot.

Tasting Table's review called the sandwich generous and well-constructed:

"The portion of chicken was large, tender, and tasty, this savory flavor came through the strongest."

The bread got equal praise. Tasting Table noted:

"The buns were big and fluffy, not dry, and it was stacked high with a team of toppings."

Jack in the Box builds the sandwich with 100 percent all white meat chicken, fileted, battered, and fried, served with tomato, lettuce, and mayo on a toasted buttered bun. At 550 calories, it is not a light meal. And at $7.69 at a Los Angeles-area location, it is not cheap either. Tasting Table acknowledged the sandwich is "a tad expensive for a drive-thru bite" but concluded it was worth the cost.

Jack in the Box has long been a California staple, known more for late-night drive-through runs than for winning national food rankings. Founded in San Diego, the chain has a loyal following on the West Coast but lacks the cultural cachet that Chick-fil-A has built through aggressive menu launches and a devoted customer base.

Chick-fil-A's sandwich earned respect, but not the crown

Tasting Table did not trash Chick-fil-A. The reviewer described the chain's spicy chicken as succulent and tender. But the buns drew criticism, characterized as dry and tasteless, a weak link in an otherwise solid sandwich.

The bigger knock was value. Tasting Table's reviewer put it bluntly:

"Although the sandwich is probably enough to curb an appetite, I would consider it to be more of a value menu item, except without the low price."

That is a pointed critique for a chain that has built its brand on quality and consistency. Chick-fil-A's spicy sandwich has a dedicated following precisely because the heat comes from the chicken itself, not from a sauce slapped on top. One Reddit commenter captured that loyalty well: "The fact that CFA's spicy chicken is actually a spicy piece of chicken and not a regular chicken sandwich with a spicy mayo/hot sauce on it is why I enjoy it so much. I want the chicken to be marinated in hot spices so every bite has heat to it and I can still add my preferred sauces like bbq."

Still, flavor alone was not enough to overcome Tasting Table's concerns about portion, bread quality, and price. Chick-fil-A has faced competitive pressure from multiple directions in recent months. Jersey Mike's recently dethroned the chain in customer satisfaction rankings after Chick-fil-A held the top spot for over a decade.

Nine chains entered, and the bottom half stayed quiet

Tasting Table did not limit its review to the two heavyweights. The outlet tested sandwiches from nine chains total. KFC, Popeyes, and McDonald's joined Jack in the Box and Chick-fil-A in the top five, though the specific order of those three was not detailed in the report. Whataburger, Wendy's, Burger King, and Church's Texas Chicken filled out the lower half.

The methodology behind the ranking remains thin. Tasting Table described the process only as having "tried and ranked" the sandwiches. No details about whether the review involved a panel, a single taster, or blind testing were provided. That lack of transparency is worth noting, a ranking that reshuffles brand reputations ought to show its work.

Chick-fil-A, for its part, has not been standing still on the menu front. The chain has been pushing into new territory with items like its Chicken and Waffles Breakfast Sandwich, chasing the high-protein breakfast trend alongside other major chains. Whether that kind of innovation extends to rethinking its spicy chicken entry remains to be seen.

The chain has also dealt with operational changes that have drawn customer attention, including dropping well-done fries at all locations to keep service lines moving, a trade-off that signals the company is prioritizing speed over customization.

Rankings like these shift no one's lunch order permanently. But they do reflect something real: in a fast food market where chicken is king, even the dominant brand can get outbuilt, outpriced, and outscored by a competitor willing to stack the sandwich higher.
