Feds Recall 5 Million Pools Over Child Drowning Risks

Imagine a backyard pool turning from a source of summer joy to a silent killer. That’s the grim reality behind a massive recall of 5 million above-ground pools, as the U.S. government steps in over safety flaws linked to tragic child drownings.

According to CBS News, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has recalled approximately 5 million above-ground pools due to a design defect tied to the deaths of nine young children over two decades, with pools sold by major vendors like Bestway, Intex, and Polygroup.

These pools, manufactured in China, have been available since 2002 at retailers across the U.S., including Amazon.com, Lowe’s, Target, and Walmart. Priced between $400 and over $1,000, they’ve also reached over 250,000 buyers in Canada.

Tragic History of Drowning Incidents

The recalled pools, all 48 inches or taller, are connected to heartbreaking losses. Between 2002 and 2007, nine children aged 22 months to 3 years drowned in these pools across states like California, Texas, Florida, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Missouri.

The core issue lies in a compression strap along the pool’s exterior. This strap allows children to climb in, even when ladders are removed, creating a deadly hazard for unsupervised kids.

The CPSC has identified at least three instances where children used these straps to access the pools. It’s a design flaw that turns a family purchase into a potential trap.

Safety Standards Finally Updated

Recognizing the danger, Bestway, Intex, and Polygroup began collaborating with the CPSC in 2023 to address the problem. A new safety standard was finalized in May 2025, aiming to eliminate such risks in future designs.

The recall, issued jointly by the CPSC and the companies, targets all pools sold since 2002 that stand 48 inches or taller. As a spokesperson for the companies noted, the goal “aims to prevent unsupervised children” from climbing in using external straps.

This isn’t just a fix for new products—it’s a retroactive effort to secure millions of existing pools. Consumers are now urged to act quickly to protect their families.

What Pool Owners Must Do Now

If you own one of these recalled pools, help is available. Contact Bestway, Intex, or Polygroup for a free repair kit, which includes a rope to reinforce the pool’s structure and block access points.

The recall number to reference is 25-393. Don’t wait for a tragedy to strike—secure your pool before the next swim season hits.

For a liberty-minded audience, this recall raises questions about government oversight versus personal responsibility. While the CPSC’s intervention addresses a real danger, should manufacturers have caught this sooner without federal nudging?

Balancing Safety and Market Freedom

From a free-market perspective, companies like Bestway and Intex bear the ultimate duty to deliver safe products. Yet, decades passed before this flaw was addressed, leaving families to bear the cost—both emotional and financial—of preventable deaths.

As investors and savers, consider the broader impact on these vendors. Recalls of this scale can dent profits and reputations, potentially creating buying opportunities if you believe in their long-term recovery—but tread carefully, as safety scandals linger in public memory.
