Canton Outback Steakhouse set to close October 11 after two decades

Outback Steakhouse will shut its Canton, Maryland location on October 11 after two decades, leaving Baltimore without a single Outback restaurant.

The Australian-themed steakhouse chain is ending operations at the long-running Canton site next month, The Sun reported, wiping out the last Outback option for Baltimore diners.

Regulars are not taking the news quietly. One longtime customer said the place had been a Saturday ritual for more than two decades.

“I’m so disappointed, I’ve been coming here every Saturday for the last twenty- three years.”

Another diner put it more bluntly: “I could cry.”

Chain thanks guests as the doors wind down

Outback issued a statement to a local outlet thanking the community and its workers.

“We are incredibly grateful to the community for its support over the years and to our team members, past and present, for their many contributions to this restaurant.”

The company added that it had been proud to serve local guests.

“We’ve been proud to be part of the community and appreciate the many guests who have chosen to dine with us over the years.”

No named executive was attached to the remarks. The message stayed short and general.

More Outback sites already gone this year

The Canton shutdown is not an isolated move. Outback has closed other restaurants this year amid operational changes.

Last month the chain shut a location in Evansville, Wyoming. And last year it announced plans to close 40 locations in 2026 as part of a broader strategy overhaul.

What that overhaul means for any single restaurant, including Canton, was not spelled out in the available reporting. The company did not list a specific reason tied only to the Maryland site.

For Baltimore, the practical result is simple. After October 11, the metro area will have no Outback Steakhouse left.

National chains open and close locations all the time. When a two-decade neighborhood stop disappears and nothing replaces it, the people who ate there every week are the ones who feel it first, and corporate strategy memos do not fill that seat.
