Belk outlet set to leave Maryland mall in January 2027 after business review

Belk is shutting its TownMall of Westminster outlet after nearly 30 years, another regional department store exit as the wider retail shakeout grinds on.

The U.S. Sun reported that Belk will close its Belk Outlet store at TownMall of Westminster in Maryland on January 15, 2027.

The move ends almost three decades of the chain’s presence at the mall. A company spokesperson tied the decision to an internal business review and offered no further explanation.

Before the doors shut, shoppers will see deep discounts. Belk plans sales of up to 80 percent on most products, with fine jewelry left out of the markdowns.

Employees get transfer offers, not a public explanation

Belk spokesperson Erika Zelna said workers would be offered a chance to move to another store. How many people work at the Westminster outlet was not made clear.

Zelna did not spell out what the business review found. No detailed company statement filled that gap.

The Woodmont Co., the Texas-based firm that oversees the mall, was contacted for comment and did not respond before the report published.

Shoppers call the regional chain hard to replace

Reaction on social media was quick and sour. One Facebook commenter put the loss in blunt terms.

One person wrote on Facebook:

"I don’t like this at all, for several reasons. Belk of course is one of the few regional department chains left (Von Maur and Boscov’s being notable other ones). “Belk dwindling leaves a presence that is largely irreplaceable.”

That complaint tracks a longer slide. Department stores once anchored suburban malls. Many of those anchors are now thinning out or gone.

Store losses pile up well beyond one Maryland mall

Belk’s exit sits inside a broader wave. Experts estimated about 15,000 store closures in 2025, more than double the prior year’s tally and the highest mark since the pandemic.

The so-called retail apocalypse started in the 2010s and sped up when COVID hit. Chains from Macy’s and Kohl’s to Nordstrom, Saks Off 5th, Joann, Party City, Claire’s, Forever 21, Foot Locker, Gap, Big Lots, and others have cut locations in recent rounds.

Drugstore names, dollar stores, electronics sellers, and even some grocers and cinemas have joined the list of announced or completed shutdowns running through 2025 and into 2026.

Belk is often cast as a JCPenney rival in the traditional department-store lane. Both face the same hard math: higher costs, changing habits, and malls that no longer draw the crowds they once did.

What the Westminster review weighed, sales, rent, traffic, or something else, stayed inside the company. Shoppers get the closing date and the clearance signs. They do not get the full ledger.

Regional chains still matter to customers who want a real store floor, not just a shipping confirmation. When those banners shrink, the options left behind are thinner, and the empty pad at the mall does not fill itself.
