Banks, post offices, and shipping services shut down for Labor Day 2026 — here's what stays open

Most banks, post offices, and package carriers will close Monday, Sept. 7, for Labor Day, but a handful of critical shipping options remain available around the clock.

Labor Day 2026 falls on Monday, Sept. 7, and the federal holiday will shutter post office lobbies, most major bank branches, and the bulk of UPS and FedEx pickup and delivery operations nationwide. Anyone planning to mail a package, deposit a check in person, or schedule a shipment should plan ahead, or know which narrow exceptions still apply.

The closures follow the same pattern Americans see every year on federal holidays, but the specifics matter for anyone caught off guard. USA TODAY laid out the full breakdown of what opens, what closes, and what runs on modified hours.

Post offices close, but Priority Mail Express still moves

The U.S. Postal Service will close all post offices for retail transactions on Sept. 7. No regular residential or business mail deliveries will go out that day.

One exception: Priority Mail Express remains available 365 days a year, including federal holidays. So time-sensitive packages sent through that service will still move, even on Labor Day Monday.

Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and Citi branches go dark

Major national banks, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and CitiBank, will close most branches on Sept. 7. Online and mobile banking platforms typically remain accessible, but anyone needing in-person service or a teller window will have to wait until Tuesday.

ATMs will still dispense cash. The open question is processing time: deposits or transactions initiated on the holiday may not clear until the next business day, and USPS did not specify whether Tuesday processing carries any additional delay.

UPS and FedEx pull most trucks off the road

UPS pickup and delivery services will not be available on Sept. 7. UPS Store locations may also be closed. The company does keep one option running: UPS Express Critical operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Customers needing that service can visit www.marken.com or call 1-800-714-8779.

FedEx follows a similar pattern. Most of its pickup and delivery services will not be available on Labor Day. FedEx Office locations will stay open but on modified hours, the company has not published exact times. FedEx Custom Critical, like its UPS counterpart, runs 24/7 regardless of the holiday.

A holiday 144 years in the making

Labor Day traces back to Tuesday, Sept. 5, 1882, when workers in New York City held the first celebration. The idea spread fast. By 1894, 23 more states had adopted the holiday on their own.

President Grover Cleveland made it official on June 28, 1894, signing a law that designated the first Monday in September as a national holiday. The U.S. Department of Labor describes it as a day honoring "the social and economic achievements of American workers" and recognizing "the many contributions workers have made to America's strength, prosperity, and well-being."

The long weekend runs from Saturday, Sept. 5, through Monday, Sept. 7. For most Americans, that means three days off, and one Monday when the errands will have to wait.

Plan around it. The government won't.
