Flint residents face final deadlines for water settlement claims up to $100,000

Flint residents have final deadlines to claim up to $100,000 from a $626 million water settlement, and Mayor Sheldon Neeley is warning them not to wait.

The Sun reported that eligible claimants in Flint, Michigan, still must finish required steps to collect money from a $626.25 million water quality class action settlement, with key cutoffs now at hand.

People represented by an attorney face an October 8 deadline. Claimants without an attorney have until October 17, 2026. Some individual class members may get different dates if their claims are unique.

Payouts run from $1,000 for property claims to as much as $100,000 for the highest-tier personal injury claims. That money only moves if residents complete the paperwork the settlement demands.

Three steps stand between residents and payment

To receive a check, eligible claimants must do one of three things: provide a Social Security number, sign the release and attestation form, or submit an eligible form of identification such as a driver’s license.

Accepting settlement money typically means waiving the right to further legal action over the same claims. That is standard in class actions, and defendants in such cases often deny wrongdoing even while paying out.

Mayor Sheldon Neeley is pressing residents not to treat an old filing as finished business.

"I strongly encourage every Flint resident who believes they may have a settlement claim to take a few minutes and make sure their information is up to date."

He also told people who were minors when a claim was filed to contact the family member, attorney, or other person who handled it.

"Check your old address and your mail for a letter from the Claims Administrator or Special Master."

Neeley added a blunt warning about complacency after years of delay.

"Do not assume that everything has been completed simply because a claim was filed years ago."

"Take the time now to make sure you have done what is required to receive the payment you may be entitled to."

Old addresses and unfinished files still block checks

The Claims Administrator or Special Master sends letters that can hold the next required step. Residents who moved may never see them unless they hunt down old mail or update their file.

Further help is available by email at [email protected]. Minors’ claims still run through a parent, guardian, attorney, or other person who filed on their behalf.

The settlement total is large on paper. The practical test is simpler: whether ordinary Flint residents finish the forms before the clock runs out and actually receive the money tied to damaged property or personal injury.

Government failure put poisoned water into homes. A settlement only counts as accountability if the people who lived with the consequences can clear the bureaucracy and collect what the deal promised.
