Taco Bell and Duolingo are handing out 1,000 limited-edition Duo plushies for National Taco Day, with a one-hour U.S. entry window that rewards app members who move fast.
USA TODAY reported that Taco Bell and the language app Duolingo have teamed up around National Taco Day, which the companies are billing this year as “Global Taco Day.”
The centerpiece is a worldwide giveaway of 1,000 limited-edition plushies modeled on Duo, Duolingo’s green owl mascot, dressed in a Taco Bell uniform and headset.
In the United States, the shot at a free plushie runs through Taco Bell Rewards. Members can visit the chain’s Tuesday Drops page on Oct. 6 from 5 p.m. ET to 6 p.m. ET, while supplies last, with a limit of one entry per person.
The plushie is valued at $30. Winners are to be notified by email around Oct. 9. Taco Bell told USA TODAY the collaboration plushie is available only during that Oct. 6 U.S. giveaway for now. Other Duo plushies remain on sale through Duolingo’s online store.
The tie-in is not only soft merchandise. Taco Bell is also rolling out a limited-edition Duo Habanero sauce at participating restaurants in the United States, Canada, Australia, China, India, Spain, and the United Kingdom, while supplies last.
Taco Bell describes the sauce as “bright and tangy, with fruity notes and habanero heat that builds with each bite.”

In the U.S., customers get one free packet with the purchase of a Doritos Locos Taco. Extra packets cost 20 cents each.
The packets carry taco-themed sayings in nine languages: English, Spanish, French, Hindi, Portuguese, German, Korean, Mandarin, and Japanese. Packaging features Duo and what the promotion calls language lessons in “sauce wisdoms.”
The companies say the collaboration is built around the word “taco,” which they say remains largely recognizable across more than 30 languages.
Eligible Taco Bell Rewards members who are not current Duolingo subscribers can claim one free month of Super Duolingo. That offer runs through Oct. 6. Codes must be redeemed by Nov. 15 and stay active for 30 days after activation.
It is a clean cross-sell: fast food points on one side, a premium language-app tier on the other, timed to a single calendar hook.
On Oct. 6 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. ET, Duo and friends were set to appear at Taco Bell’s Midtown Cantina in New York City for tacos, the new sauce, language lessons, and giveaways. Additional events were planned in Mumbai, Toronto, and Shanghai, with more plushie giveaways slated in several international markets.
The stunt sits in a longer Taco Bell habit of owning the taco calendar. The chain launched the Taco Lover’s Pass in 2022, helped open “Taco Tuesday” to restaurants nationwide in 2023, and in 2024 moved National Taco Day to the first Tuesday in October.
This year’s version adds an owl in a headset, a short digital entry window, and a sauce packet that doubles as a mini language flashcard.
Free plushies and free app months are still marketing. Customers who want the owl need a Rewards login, a one-hour window, and a little luck before the 1,000 units are gone.
