Outback Steakhouse will shut Canton location on October 11

Outback Steakhouse is closing its Canton, Maryland restaurant on October 11, ending more than two decades there and leaving the Baltimore area without a single location.

The Sun reported that the long-running Canton Outback will shut its doors on October 11, a move that wipes out the chain’s last foothold in the Baltimore area.

Regulars are already mourning the loss. One diner said the Saturday habit had lasted more than two decades. Another put it more bluntly: the news was enough to bring tears.

The company offered thanks, not a detailed explanation for this specific shutdown. No public breakdown of sales, lease terms, or local losses has been tied to the Canton site in the available reporting.

Company thanks guests as the last Baltimore-area Outback disappears

Outback told a local outlet it was grateful for years of community support and for the work of current and former team members at the restaurant.

In a statement, the chain said:

“We are incredibly grateful to the community for its support over the years and to our team members, past and present, for their many contributions to this restaurant.”

It added:

“We’ve been proud to be part of the community and appreciate the many guests who have chosen to dine with us over the years.”

That is the official line. What it does not answer is why this location, after roughly twenty years, is the one getting cut now.

Diners describe a twenty-three-year Saturday ritual ending

On social media, longtime customers made the stakes personal. One wrote that the disappointment ran deep after visiting every Saturday for twenty-three years.

The diner’s words were plain:

“I’m so disappointed, I’ve been coming here every Saturday for the last twenty- three years.”

Another customer’s reaction was even shorter:

“I could cry,”

Those comments capture what corporate restructuring often misses. A chain sees a floor plan and a P&L. Neighbors see the place they marked birthdays, game days, and ordinary weekends.

Broader pullback already underway across the chain

The Canton shutdown does not stand alone. Outback has closed other restaurants this year during a stretch of operational changes.

Last month, the chain shuttered a location in Evansville, Wyoming. Last year, it announced plans to close 40 locations in 2026 as part of a strategy overhaul.

Canton now joins that list. When the lights go out on October 11, Baltimore will be left without an Outback Steakhouse at all.

No separate local reason, rent spike, staffing collapse, or sales freefall, has been spelled out for this address. The public record so far points to a company-wide reset, not a one-off scandal or health-code blowup.

What the October 11 closing leaves behind

For two decades the Canton restaurant was a reliable, if unflashy, option: steaks, standard sides, and a familiar booth. That kind of middle-market chain spot is exactly what gets trimmed when national brands decide the map is too crowded or the returns too thin.

Workers at the site face the immediate hit. Guests lose a routine. The city loses one more full-service restaurant that did not depend on trends or tourist gimmicks.

Outback’s gratitude toward staff and diners is appropriate. It does not change the result. The decision has been made, the date is set, and the Baltimore area will have one fewer place to sit down for a steak dinner.

When national chains thin their footprints, local regulars and line cooks pay first, while the strategy memos get written somewhere else.
