Costco announced the limited-time return of its twisted churro to U.S. food courts, the same $1.49 treat fans have demanded since the warehouse club pulled it from menus in 2024.
The retailer made the announcement on Friday after teasing shoppers earlier in the week with a cryptic Instagram video. The clip showed two Costco employees discussing a mystery menu item, its name bleeped out, leaving the company's massive online following to guess what was coming back.
They did not have to wait long. Costco's formal announcement put it plainly: "The Churro is BACK in U.S. food courts for a limited time! Look out for it at your local warehouse over the coming weeks as exact launch dates vary."
The twisted churro first appeared in Costco food courts in 2021, replacing the classic straight churro that had been a staple since the 1990s. That original version sold for 99 cents. The twisted version carried a $1.49 price tag, and by all accounts, it built its own loyal following before Costco pulled it from menus in 2024.
Costco tried to fill the gap. Earlier this year, the warehouse club added mini churro bites to a $2.99 caramel sundae. Shoppers were unimpressed. The consensus among fans was clear: a few churro pieces on top of ice cream did not replace the full-size food court churro they actually wanted.
The company has been on something of a food court expansion this year, rolling out chicken tenders nationwide and introducing a hot dog-and-water-bottle combo. Those additions landed without much controversy. The churro, though, was the item that kept generating noise online, two years of it.
Instagram comments on the announcement captured the mood. "Dreams do come true," one user wrote. Another posted a single word: "FINALLY." One parent described "the scream my kid just screamed." Not everyone was satisfied with the fine print. "LIMITED TIME???? NO. YOU KEEP IT ON THERE!" one commenter wrote. Another countered: "Limited time better be the next 50 years."
Not every Costco shopper greeted the news with open arms. One commenter pushed back on the twisted version entirely: "We meant the old school straight churros, not these twisted imposters." Others used the moment to lobby for different discontinued items, with at least one user posting, "Combo pizza next please!"
Costco has not publicly explained why the twisted churro was pulled in the first place, whether it was a corporate decision, a supply issue, or something else. Fox News Digital reached out to the company for comment. The price is expected to hold at $1.49, the same as before the item was discontinued, though that figure comes from published reports rather than an official Costco confirmation.
Exact rollout dates vary by warehouse, so not every location will have the churro on the same day. Costco offered no end date for the limited run.
In an era when companies keep finding ways to give customers less for more, a warehouse club bringing back a $1.49 crowd favorite, even temporarily, is the kind of straightforward move that earns loyalty the old-fashioned way.
