Trump Targets Biden-Era Appliance Regulations for Reversal

President Donald Trump has taken a bold step to unwind federal regulations on home appliances, targeting rules set by the Biden administration with an executive order issued on Inauguration Day.

Under Trump’s first year, significant moves have been made to halt new restrictions and revisit existing ones on appliances like dishwashers, air conditioners, and water heaters, though several Biden-era rules remain in place.

According to Fox News, the Biden administration had imposed stringent requirements on a wide array of household items. These included stoves, furnaces, refrigerators, light bulbs, and washing machines.

Decades of Tightening Appliance Standards

Washing machines, for instance, have endured six rounds of increasingly strict energy and water limits over the years. Dishwashers have faced four such rounds. The result? Machines that require more maintenance, clean less effectively, and wear out faster.

Dishwashers now take over two hours per load, double the time compared to before federal rules kicked in. Meanwhile, the Biden Department of Energy added yet another layer of restrictions for these appliances, set to roll out in the coming years.

Air conditioning systems have seen dramatic price jumps, with costs doubling from about $5,000 fifteen years ago to over $10,000 today. A Biden EPA rule mandating climate-related requirements for systems made after January 1, 2025, is the primary driver. Industry reports noted hikes of up to $3,000 last summer alone.

Trump Administration Pushes Back on Costs

The Trump EPA has proposed a rule to offer more compliance flexibility for air conditioning systems. This could help curb further price spikes.

On water heaters, a Biden DOE rule from December 2024 would have effectively banned tankless gas models by imposing costly new standards. Fortunately, Congress and President Trump enacted a law in April to repeal this regulation, preserving homeowner choice.

However, a separate Biden rule on conventional tank storage water heaters still stands. It’s expected to increase costs by up to $953 when it takes effect in 2029.

Furnace Rules Hit Older Homes Hard

A 2023 Biden furnace regulation effectively outlaws gas-fired non-condensing units, often the best fit for millions of older homes. The DOE projects cost increases of up to $853 by 2028. Industry sources warn the real impact could be even steeper, especially for lower-income households.

Shower water use restrictions, rooted in a 1992 law, are another sticking point. Trump issued an executive order and a DOE rule to interpret the law more flexibly, applying limits per nozzle rather than per unit, benefiting multi-nozzle showers. A House bill recently passed to codify this shower nozzle change. However, a Senate version is still pending.

Debate Over Regulation and Freedom

The issue of appliance regulations has sparked heated debate among policymakers and homeowners alike. Many argue these rules infringe on personal choice and burden families with unnecessary costs.

For a center-right audience wary of government overreach, Trump’s deregulatory push is a breath of fresh air. It signals a return to prioritizing efficiency and affordability over bureaucratic mandates. Why should a dishwasher take twice as long to do half the job?

Take action now: If you’re in the market for appliances, consider buying before more Biden-era rules kick in. Research models unaffected by pending regulations, and save on energy bills by choosing practical, not over-engineered, options. Stay tuned for updates on furnace and water heater rules—your wallet depends on it.
