Starbucks is shaking up its loyalty program with a bold new structure set to launch soon. This overhaul promises fresh perks for millions of coffee lovers across the U.S. Get ready for a rewards system designed to keep you coming back.

Starting March 10, Starbucks will introduce a three-tiered loyalty program in the U.S., featuring “green,” “gold,” and “reserve” levels, as announced by chief brand officer Tressie Lieberman at the company’s investor day on Thursday.

Starbucks first launched its rewards program in 2009. It has since grown into one of the oldest and largest in the restaurant industry, according to consultants. The company reported 35.5 million active members as of Wednesday.

Tracing the Evolution of Starbucks Rewards

The current loyalty system, unchanged since 2019, lacks tiered bands. This new structure replaces that flat model with escalating benefits across the three tiers. Each level offers more points per dollar spent, sweetening the deal for frequent customers.

The top “reserve” tier stands out with exclusive perks. According to The Post, Members at this level can access paid trips to destinations like Tokyo, Milan, or Costa Rica, per the company’s announcement. It’s a rare offering in the restaurant space.

Another new benefit applies to all tiers on a select day each month. On this day, customizations—such as an extra espresso shot—come at no additional cost. It’s a small but clever nudge to boost engagement.

New Leadership Driving Strategic Changes

Starbucks’ new CEO, Brian Niccol, joined the company in September 2024. He’s been vocal about shifting focus away from broad discounts. Instead, the emphasis is on building deeper customer connections.

Niccol elaborated on this approach during an earnings call on Wednesday. “It’s through better engagement that we’re getting people to be active, not through discounting and couponing, but rather giving people the Starbucks experience,” he said. This signals a clear strategic pivot.

Lieberman echoed this sentiment at the investor event. She noted that if half of loyalty members completed just one extra transaction annually, it could generate $150 million in yearly revenue. That’s a powerful incentive for the company to refine its program.

Industry Experts Weigh in on Tiers

Kate Hogenson, a principal consultant at the Mallett Group, offered insight into loyalty strategies. She explained that the best programs create emotional memories through free products, merchandise, or unique experiences. Tiered rewards, she added, help achieve this.

Hogenson also noted that tiered systems are more common in travel than in restaurants. Differentiating experiences between tiers is tougher in the food sector. Starbucks’ approach, therefore, is a bit of a gamble.

Still, the potential payoff is significant for a company of this scale. With 35.5 million active members, even small shifts in behavior could drive big profits. The question is whether these tiers will resonate with everyday customers.

Analyzing the Free-Market Implications

From a free-market perspective, Starbucks’ move is a masterclass in incentivizing behavior without slashing prices. Broad discounts often erode margins, but targeted rewards can build loyalty while preserving profitability. It’s a smart play in a competitive industry.

Yet, some might argue this risks alienating casual customers who don’t climb the tiers. If the lower “green” level feels underwhelming, Starbucks could lose less frequent buyers to competitors. Balancing exclusivity with inclusivity will be key.

For investors and wealth-builders, this is a reminder of the power of customer retention. Companies that master engagement often outperform peers in the long run. Keep an eye on Starbucks’ stock as this program rolls out—consider it a potential buy if engagement metrics improve post-launch.
